Healthy aging of the left ventricle in relationship to cardiovascular risk factors: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

Healthy aging of the left ventricle in relationship to cardiovascular risk factors: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

Aims : To compare left ventricular and aortic structural and functional parameters in individuals with and without known risk factors (obesity, smoking, diabetes, hypertension, etc.).
The study shows that left ventricular structure and function are better preserved in individuals without risk factors.
This preservation is more prominent in men than in women.
Obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, hypertension, and diabetes denote the major risks of LV structure and function.
This study also shows that with or without a risk factor, arterial stiffness seems inevitably linked to biological aging.
