Automated segmentation of the aorta from phase contrast MR images: Validation against expert tracing in healthy volunteers and in patients with a dilated aorta

Automated segmentation of the aorta from phase contrast MR images: Validation against expert tracing in healthy volunteers and in patients with a dilated aorta

Aims : An automated technique for aortic segmentation from PC images was developed and demonstrated its ability to accurately determine the area and the diameter of the aortic lumen for both ascending and descending aorta in agreement with a reference expert manual segmentation.
The technique has proved to be highly reproducible and to be robust to differences in image characteristics related to the MR scanner and to anatomical variations, such as aortic dilation related to various pathologies.
Furthermore,  technique could be used as a valuable basis for an objective characterization of aortic function.
